Introduction

The Program

The Graduate Program in Ocean Engineering (PPGEO), of Federal University of Rio Grande - FURG, had its first entry in the year of 1995, being created to gather knowledge in the areas of engineering (especially mechanical and civil), physics, mathematics and oceanography. Therefore, since its inception, the faculty is composed of professionals with expertise in the mentioned areas, which allowed the PPGEO to develop interdisciplinary research activities. This profile is reflected in the student body of PPGEO, being composed by graduates from undergraduate courses in the areas of mechanical engineering (and their different emphases), civil engineering (and their different emphases), chemical engineering, water engineering, hydraulic engineering, sanitary engineering, and also as mathematics, physics and oceanography.

The PPGEO is linked at the School of Engineering (EE) of the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) and is evaluated in Engineering Area III of CAPES (Higher Education Personnel Improvement Coordination). Since the year of 2024, the PPGEO has the master and doctorate degrees with level 4 in the last quadrennial assessment of CAPES (2017 – 2020), being the sole program in Ocean Engineering located in the southern region of Brazil. PPGEO has received regional and national recognition of human resources for the academic and industrial sectors, as well as, in the generation of scientific and technological products with contribution to the borders of scientific knowledge, in industry and for decision-makers public policies.

Mission
Develop research and train qualified professionals capable of working in different technical-scientific sectors in the area of Ocean Engineering (Coastal Engineering, Port Engineering, Maritime Engineering and Naval Engineering), committed to sustainable technological development, income generation and preservation of the coastal ecosystem and maritime region of southern Brazil.

Vision
To be recognized nationally and internationally as a program of excellence in research and training of qualified professionals in the area of Ocean Engineering, dedicated to contributing to the improvement of the social, economic and environmental conditions of the coastal and maritime ecosystem in the southern region of Brazil.
